Generative Art Timeline · Chapter 7: Net Era (1990s)
1997
Form Art by Alexei Shulgin

Alexei Shulgin’s Form Art is c3.hu of net art that explores the HTML language’s potential as a medium for artistic expression. Shulgin uses playful manipulation and repetition of basic HTML elements to create visually dynamic and ever-changing compositions that were meant to be interpreted as challenges to traditional notions of art in the rising idea of the digital age that was taking hold in the mid-90s. Society was coming to terms on a mass level that we could no longer afford to fear or slow digitization. Art began reflecting this slow coming to terms and that included net art in general. Form Art received an honorary mention at the 1997 Ars Electronica.
