Included in Casey Reas’s course, 50 Years of Software Artists at UCLA, is a standout example of net art and the only piece appearing outside the decade of the ’90s. Summer, nearly twenty years after net.art first appeared, navigates the evolving relationship between art and Internet as speeds and loading time continued to affect the experience of her work. In this interactive piece, an animated loop shows Lialina swinging, integrated into the browser window. Each frame of the animation, though, originates from a different website, making the smoothness of the swing dependent on varying internet speeds and server functionality. This setup exemplifies Lialina’s exploration of how technological infrastructure impacts the experience of art, illustrating her thematic focus on the dependency of digital media experiences on real-time network conditions. Unlike earlier works affected unintentionally by tech evolution, Summer intentionally embeds these dynamics, reflecting the impermanent and fluctuating nature the digital. The work also underscored the reliance of the viewer on a technological layer before one can even access the work. The performance of this technological layer thus inherently becomes a part of the work, a point expertly highlighted in this work by Lialina.
