As included in Casey Reas’s course 50 Years of Software Artists at UCLA, Manovich’s Soft Cinema is an innovative exploration into the dynamics of digital cinema. This project emerged from Manovich’s collaborations with Andreas Kratky and notable contributors across various fields, including music by DJ Spooky and Scanner. Soft Cinema utilizes algorithms to edit media dynamically, creating an ever-changing narrative from a database of video clips. The software, written in Lingo, sorts clips based on both content and formal attributes such as color and movement, allowing the creation of varied cinematic sequences. This approach exemplifies a shift towards a database-driven narrative, which Manovich has termed 'Soft(ware) Cinema,' reflecting a new era where software and human inputs merge to generate unique cinematic experiences. This project highlights a pivotal moment in the evolution of digital and software media, offering a profound insight into the possibilities of algorithmic creativity beyond static imagery.
