Social medial 2.0 began in earnest with Instagram. Along with Apple’s iPad, Instagram’s launch saw the second generation of device and social, now married in an eternal embrace, with a photo-centered update that appealed to a more youthful demographic. The two cases of Facebook and Instagram demonstrate the rapid changes in taste for social media users, as after only a few years of dominance, Instagram’s rapid rise prompted Zuckerberg’s Facebook to purchase the startup in 2012 for $1 billion. Instagram would be joined by TikTok in 2016, which continued the transition on social media towards richer media, from text on Twitter to still images on Instagram and video on TikTok.
