Langton’s ant was a cellular automaton created by Christopher Langton. Operating on a two-dimensional grid, this simple algorithmic system features an “ant” that follows a set of rules. Surprisingly, it produces emergent, complex, and beautiful patterns, blurring the line between randomness and determinism.

This phenomenon laid the groundwork for a new era of generative art, inspiring artists and programmers to explore the aesthetic potential of algorithms based on organic life. Langton’s Ant demonstrated that, with basic rules and repetition, intricate, visually captivating patterns could emerge organically.

Artist Casey Reas mentioned this development to Le Random as an example of an important moment to include on the Timeline.
