Portrait of the Machine As a Young Artist by John R. Pierce in Playboy One of the Earliest Computer Art Essays

This landmark essay in the popular magazine for men helped nudge computer art into mainstream culture. Written by Bell Labs’s John R. Pierce, the title refers to the James Joyce novel, alluding to the computer as a maturing artist. The article encouraged the use of artistic experimentation with computers and technology with a staunchly pro-technology argument.
